Algeria: President Tebboune's son brought to justice

Trial of Kamel Chikhi, a businessman implicated in a cocaine trafficking case, begins. But it is the presence in court of one of his co-defendants, Khaled Tebboune, which marks the spirits. He is none other than the son of the current Algerian president.

As of the election of Abdelmadjid Tebboune last December, Internet users and demonstrators mocked, the " cocaine president ". A slogan which alluded to the legal setbacks of her son, Khaled Tebboune. It is for his alleged links with Kamel Chikhi that he is prosecuted.

Kamel Chikhi, real estate developer, nicknamed " the butcher ", is the main accused in the case of the 700 kilos of cocaine seized in an Algerian port in May 2018. But during the investigation, the passage of Khaled Tebboune in the offices of Kamel Chikhi had intrigued. Investigators then suspect the president's son of being involved in another case concerning real estate projects.

Placed in pre-trial detention under Bouteflika

Currently in pre-trial detention alongside six other accused, Khaled Tebboune will face several charges, including "trading in influence", "abuse of office", "collection of improper gifts" and "corruption". He had been placed in pre-trial detention in June 2018, a year and a half before the election of his father as head of the country. Abdelaziz Bouteflika was then still the president.
