Investigative bodies of the Moscow administration of the TFR continue to investigate a criminal case against 29-year-old native of Uzbekistan, Maftunakhon Karimova, who is accused of attempted murder of her own son. On February 12, a woman brought her infant to the entrance to the Victory Park metro station and left him at the door. Police officers figured her out by surveillance cameras and was detained the next day.
The Dorogomilov court of Moscow charged Karimova with attempted murder of a minor and sent the woman under arrest for two months.
“Investigators with the participation of a translator interrogated a 29-year-old woman ... During the interrogation, she pleaded guilty in full and told the investigation that because of the difficult financial situation she decided to get rid of the child,” the press service of the UK said.
According to Karimova’s lawyer Alexander Timoshenko, his client decided to take a desperate step, because she wanted to save her son from starvation: she herself did not have money for food for the baby, or breast milk.
In the media, the woman was dubbed another "cuckoo mother", who left her son to die. The lawyer believes that because of the public outcry, Karimov eventually decided to bring in a more serious article: she was initially accused under Art. 125 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (leaving the child in danger), but then the court charged her with attempted murder of a minor (part 3 of article 30 paragraph “c” part 2 of article 105 of article of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). Under this particularly grave article, a woman can face up to 15 years in prison.
However, the lawyer Karimova insists that the charge against his client and the measure of restraint chosen by the court are unfair.
“The woman escaped from Uzbekistan from her tyrant father. In Russia she became pregnant, the father of the boy disappeared. Karimova went to Naro-Fominsk. She gave birth prematurely, the birth was very difficult. After discharge, she went with her child in her arms every day to look for work: either a construction site, then a fish shop, or a handyman or a cleaner in a store. I gave all the money for a bed, food and medicine for my son. But still it was not enough, ”Tymoshenko told RT.
He explained that, according to Karimova, not knowing where else to turn for help, she decided to go to the hospital where she gave birth to a son, and asked the doctors to pick up the boy. The baby also needed treatment - due to prematurity, the child suffered from a congenital disease. I’m driving out of the hospital with a baby, Tymoshenko claims.
However, in the Perinatal Center of Naro-Fominsk, RT was assured that the woman did not contact them.
At the same time, Karimova’s lawyer notes that on the same evening his client also came to one of Naro-Fominsk’s orphanages, but couldn’t get there, as it was already around 11 pm. In the end, she returned home with her son.
The boy was constantly crying from hunger, and after a sleepless night, Karimova decided to go with her son to Moscow. She understood that leaving the child with her means dooming him to death, the lawyer explains the reasons for the act of his client.
“Already in complete despair, I would say, not fully aware of my actions, the woman asked a friend to take her to Moscow - apparently, she decided that there were more people in the capital and more opportunities to save the child. She didn’t know the city, asked to take her to the metro station - she remembered that it opens at five o’clock, there are people there, ”Tymoshenko said.
Karimova nevertheless reached her goal - one of the subway employees noticed the child left behind in the snow. He called the doctors and the police. The boy was taken to the hospital, where he receives all the necessary care and nutrition.
The Commissioner for Children's Rights of the Russian Federation, Anna Kuznetsova, stated that she was following the situation and was in touch with the regional ombudsman.
It was not possible to get an operational comment from the Ombudsman for Children in Moscow regarding the future fate of the baby and the possibility of helping his mother RT.
Prison and deportation
A lawyer from a native of Uzbekistan, meanwhile, is preparing to appeal a preventive measure and intends to seek a re-qualification of the prosecution article to a less serious one. At the same time, Tymoshenko is trying to come to an agreement with organizations that help women in difficult life situations. He hopes that he will be able to rescue Karimova from the pre-trial detention center and find her temporary housing.
“As a lawyer, I can confidently say that the corpus delicti is frankly far-fetched. Karimova is now in serious condition: she is constantly crying and probably herself needs psychological rehabilitation. She ended up in jail only with the things that were on her. Now there is a fundraising so that a woman can buy at least elementary personal hygiene products in her jail, ”the lawyer said.
Tymoshenko also fears that the case may go to the deportation of a woman from the Russian Federation. According to him, Karimova’s homeland has nowhere to go either: before leaving for Russia, her father drove her out of the house, and the rest of her relatives turned away from her when they learned about the birth of an illegitimate child. At the same time, the Uzbek embassy’s requests for lawyer to help Karimova are still unanswered.
