Tests have revealed 99 new cases of coronavirus on board a quarantined cruise ship since early February off Japan, Japanese media reported quoting the latest figures from the Ministry of Health.

This would bring the number of positive cases seen on the Diamond Princess to 454. The Ministry of Health did not wish to confirm this data immediately. The ship was quarantined with 3,711 people on board in early February at the port of Yokohama, near Tokyo.

Evacuation of American passengers

In the absence of sufficient screening resources, only 1,219 passengers were able to undergo virus detection tests, even though the passengers had been ordered to stay in their cabin for 14 days.

This weekend, the United States evacuated from the ship some 300 of their nationals and their families with two planes, the first of which landed in California overnight Sunday to Monday while a second was expected in Texas. The returnees will have to observe a quarantine of 14 days, the supposed maximum duration of the incubation.

Fourteen positive cases - people whose test results arrived during the operation - are among the approximately 300 Americans evacuated, the State Department announced. These people were isolated from the other passengers on the plane.

At the same time, at least 40 infected Americans on board are hospitalized in Japan, according to Washington. Some 350 American passengers were on board, but not all of them agreed to depart.
