The US Senate on Thursday approved a resolution to restrict President Donald Trump's ability to wage war on Iran, but Trump vowed to use his veto against it.

The decision comes after a strike that killed the Quds Force commander Qasim Soleimani last month and Tehran's response, which raised fears of a wider regional conflict.

The decision won 51 votes in favor, 44 against, noting that eight members of the Republican Party supported the decision, which Trump is expected to use veto against.

The resolution obliges Trump to withdraw American forces conducting combat operations against Iran unless Congress declares war or approves a specific mandate to use military force.

And the House of Representatives, which is dominated by Democrats, passed the resolution demanding the President not to take any military action against Iran without the approval of Congress.
