09 February 2020Switzerland tries to turn the page on homophobia. The population of the Swiss Confederation voted, with 62% in favor, to modify the law on discrimination so as to make it applicable also to sexual orientation and sexual identity.

Once amended, the law will allow prosecuting those who insult, attack or publicly exclude people as a result of their sexual orientation. Current law only applies to religious or racial discrimination.

For now it is still projections, made by the GFS institute (the results are expected shortly). It was the Swiss People's Party, Svp, the strongest party in Parliament, that launched the referendum with the hope of blocking the law. The polls anticipated the result considering that most parties took sides in support of the amendment to protect the gay, lesbian and bisexual community.
