On December 25, a 73-year-old man was the victim of an assault in Béziers, in the Hérault region. The septuagenarian had been severely struck in the head, resulting in a four-day coma. A woman, at whom the assault allegedly took place, transported him to the hospital, in serious condition, explaining that he had been the victim of an ambush on leaving his home, indicates Raphaël Balland, prosecutor from Béziers.

The victim explained a few days later that he had been attacked by two hooded and armed men. Tuesday, five suspects, three women and two men, were arrested and placed in police custody, continues the representative of the prosecution: among the women, is the one in whom the violence was allegedly committed.

Charged for "attempted extortion committed with a weapon"

Thursday, after the police custody, four of the five suspects were charged with the count of "attempted extortion committed with a weapon". Two women and a man were placed in pre-trial detention and a man was placed under judicial supervision.

The investigations are continuing under the authority of the investigating judge, in particular to try to clarify the circumstances and the motive for these facts, said the prosecutor.
