Sudan announcement divides with Israel divides

The meeting between General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Benyamin Netanyahu on Monday surprised more than one in Sudan. Starting with the government. That evening, the government spokesman said he had not been informed of the meeting.

On his return to Khartoum on Tuesday, General Al-Burhan held talks with the Sovereign Council . This body, made up of civilians and soldiers, is responsible for leading the country until the transition to civilian power. The head of the Sudanese junta said he was acting to " protect the national security of Sudan and its interests ".

The prospect of a rapprochement with Israel is not unanimous. Thus, the Sudanese Communist Party denounced what it calls " a stab in the back, for the anti-imperialist struggle of the Sudanese people and their support for the Palestinian people ".

Amjed Farid, a member of the Association of Sudanese Professionals, believes that General Al-Burhan does not have the mandate to conduct such negotiations on behalf of the Sudanese people.

Others, on the contrary, see it as an opportunity for Sudan to break out of its isolation. Normalizing relations with Israel would be a way of attracting the good graces of the United States, with the hope that the country would be removed from the list of states that finance terrorism.

General Al-Burhan was also invited to Washington. It is the first time in thirty years that the United States has invited a senior Sudanese official.
