According to the Philippines Department of Health, the man was a Chinese national from the city of Wuhan, where the virus first broke out. He should have sought medical help on January 25 after receiving fever, cough and sore throat - which then developed into a serious pneumonia.

"The patient was stable and showed signs of improvement, but the situation deteriorated over the past 24 hours resulting in his death," the ministry said in a statement, according to the AP.

New deaths in China

Early Sunday, China's state television announced that 45 people have died in the country just the past 24 hours. In total, 304 people have died as a result of the virus in China and about 14,300 people have been confirmed to be infected, the AP reports.

In the Chinese city of Huanggang, located near Wuhan, six officials have been fired because of deficiencies in the management of the virus outbreak.

According to Huanggang's mayor, there is a lack of medical equipment, such as protective clothing and face masks, which has impaired the ability to treat patients.

Classified as dangerous to society

On Saturday, the Swedish government announced that it would classify the new corona virus as a general and socially dangerous disease. Other diseases that have the same classification are Ebola, SARS and smallpox.

"In practical terms, this means that infection control doctors can take coercive measures or take other extraordinary measures in the spread of infection," said Minister of Social Affairs Lena Hallengren (S) during a press conference.
