  • The Minister of Action and Public Accounts, Gérald Darmanin, clarified his position for the municipal elections next March, in an interview with La Voix du Nord published on Tuesday: he will be at the top of the list in Tourcoing (North).
  • While several members of the government have also lifted the veil on their intentions, others have yet to clarify their position.
  • Prime Minister Edouard Philippe, in particular, is expected this Friday in Le Havre, the city of which he was mayor from 2010 to 2017.

“I am at the top of the list. In an interview published in La Voix du Nord on Tuesday, Gérald Darmanin announced that he will run for the town hall of Tourcoing (North) next March in less than two months, which he already headed from 2014 to 2017. If the minister Action and Public Accounts ended the suspense, other members of the government still did not specify their intentions for the municipal elections of March 15 and 22.

The most emblematic case: that of Edouard Philippe. The Prime Minister is expected Friday in Le Havre (Seine-Maritime) for the launch of the outgoing majority campaign. Will he announce a candidacy? For those around him, there is little doubt: “He needs this local anchoring. The chief executive, however, did not lift the veil as to his position on the list.

Agnes Buzyn "wants"

In Paris, the candidacy of Agnès Buzyn in the 15th arrondissement is also still on the agenda. Sunday, she expressed on RTL her "desire to join the Benjamin Griveaux campaign", stressing however that her agenda was very busy due to the pension reform and the coronavirus. "I prefer to be focused on my ministerial files," added the Minister of Health.

In the entourage of the candidate invested by LREM vis-a-vis Anne Hidalgo, one underlines in any case the "great qualities" of Agnès Buzyn, in particular his experience on the questions of solidarity and health. The minister would thus join Marlène Schiappa, Secretary of State for Gender Equality, and Agnès Pannier-Runacher, Secretary of State to the Minister of Economy and Finance, candidates in the 16th and 17th arrondissements alongside Benjamin Griveaux.

Lecornu and Riester candidates

Several other ministers are casting doubt. Sébastien Lecornu will present himself in Vernon (Eure), “that's for sure”, we are told by the entourage of the Minister responsible for Territorial Communities. As the head of the list or as a running mate? The candidate intends to decide during the last fortnight of February. The terms of the equation are the same on the side of Franck Riester, as Le Parisien pointed out again on Monday. The Minister of Culture should, however, be a candidate for Coulommiers (Seine-et-Marne).

Other members of the government are also approached on majority lists. This is particularly the case of Elisabeth Borne in Montrouge (Hauts-de-Seine), Emmanuelle Wargon in Saint-Mandé (Val-de-Marne) or even Aurélien Taquet in Asnières-sur-Seine (Hauts- de-Seine). If they confirm their candidacy on a list, they will join in the municipal battle their colleagues Geneviève Darrieussecq, candidate in Mont-de-Marsan, Jean-Baptiste Djebbari in Limoges, Christelle Dubos in Sadirac (Gironde), Marc Fesneau in Marchenoir (Loir-et-Cher) and Gabriel Attal in Vanves (Hauts-de-Seine).

The Biarritz case

In the candidacies of members of the government, Biarritz is a special case: Didier Guillaume, Minister of Agriculture, is at the top of the list facing the outgoing Michel Veunac (Modem), which counts Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne, Secretary of State to the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, among his running mate. "Having two ministers facing each other is not desirable," we recognize at Matignon. Edouard Philippe and Emmanuel Macron should therefore decide quickly. Tuesday morning, Didier Guillaume seems to have opened the door to a withdrawal: "I await their arbitration, which will happen in my opinion in the hours and days to come, and I will respect the arbitration", he said. declared on BFMTV.

"Didier Guillaume made the bet that Veunac would not represent himself, but his bet does not work because Veunac returns there, analyzes a minister on condition of anonymity. Yes, he is 72 years old, but LREM has invested well the outgoing mayor of Pamiers (Ariège), who is 93 years old, it's daring! "And to add:" Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne had another idea: to support Veunac to resume the mandate along the way. "
