The number of infected is now up to 4,587 and the number of dead is 106, according to the latest official figures from the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).

So far, all infected globally have been people who were in or near Wuhan. However, on Tuesday, Germany and Japan reported their first cases of dispersal between people outside China. Also, a person in Vietnam must have been infected outside China.

Evacuations started

On Wednesday, 240 Americans were evacuated by flights from Wuhan. Previously, a Japanese aircraft with 200 people from Wuhan landed in Tokyo. There, patients with symptoms have been taken to a specialized facility, while those without symptoms are taken to other hospitals for examination.

Two aircraft will also be sent to evacuate EU citizens, the European Commission announced on Tuesday. A first aircraft takes off from France today to pick up 250 French nationals. Later this week, a second aircraft will be lifted to pick up 100 citizens from other countries.

Five Swedes live in Wuhan

Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde (S) cannot answer whether Swedes will be on board the aircraft.

"This is about the EU having activated its civil protection mechanism and we are currently investigating whether it applies to Swedes as well," she says.

The Foreign Ministry has contact with about 15 Swedes in Wuhan.
