The death toll from a gas tanker explosion in Lima, Peru, rose to 15 on Monday after the death of a seven-year-old child who had been hospitalized with severe burns, announced the Minister of Health of Peru, Elizabeth Hinostroza. In total, five children were killed in the explosion of this gas truck which occurred Thursday in Villa El Salvador, a suburb of 500,000 inhabitants south of Lima.

Six minors are also among the 48 injured, who "suffered numerous burns," said the minister, during a visit to the victims of the accident. "They are in serious condition and are currently fighting for life," she said.

Gas leak

The Brazilian Ministry of Health sent some 18,000 cm² of human skin at the end of last week for transplants on the injured. The very dramatic accident took place early Thursday morning when residents left for work.

The explosion occurred following a gas leak caused by the detachment of a pipe from the truck loaded with 10,000 liters of fuel, passed on a donkey. The fire spread very quickly. Thirteen fire trucks were needed to deal with the fire, which destroyed fifteen homes.
