A man was tried on Monday January 20 by the police court of Dijon (Côte-d'Or) for having installed… a saddle on his electric scooter. He was fined 120 euros for a "non-compliant" vehicle, police said on Friday.

The facts go back to March 2019. "At the time, there was still a big legal vagueness on electric scooters," said the public prosecutor Sébastien Tournier. The controlled vehicle was considered to be "non-compliant for public roads".

Authorized on condition of being approved

Since then, a decree has included electric scooters in the highway code. But the latter only concerns "vehicles without a seat," said the public prosecutor, hence the continuation of the prosecution against the man. This scooter can however find its place in other categories of vehicles, such as electric scooters.

But for that, it must be "approved for the road": that it has mirrors, a registration card and involves the wearing of a helmet, details Sébastien Tournier. If the fine is high, the public prosecutor specifies that he had requested a penalty of 180 euros, and that the user risked a fine of up to 750 euros.
