Heiko Maas, Minister of Foreign Affairs in Germany - CHINA NEWS / SIPA

The Jews will leave Germany "massively" if nothing is done to combat the resurgence of anti-Semitism, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas alerted on Sunday.

"We must take emergency measures (to avoid) a mass departure of the Jews from Germany," Heiko Maas wrote in a column at the Spiegel , on the eve of the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp.

Jewish sites to be better protected

One in two Jews has already considered leaving the country, he said, adding that insults and anti-Semitic attacks were occurring daily in Germany. The fight against anti-Semitism will be a priority for Germany, which takes the rotating presidency of the European Union in July and the presidency of the Council of Europe in November, he assured.

The Jewish community and Jewish sites should be better protected "everywhere in Europe", he said, announcing that Germany would contribute 500,000 euros to the OSCE (Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe).

An increase in racist and anti-Semitic attacks

Holocaust survivors will gather on Monday at the Auschwitz site to mark the 75th anniversary of the liberation by Soviet troops of this death camp where Nazi Germany killed more than 1.1 million people, mainly Jews.

Germany is experiencing an increase in racist and anti-Semitic aggressions in the country, with in particular an assault rifle attack on a synagogue full of faithful at the end of 2019 in Halle, where a massacre had been narrowly avoided.
