January 24, 2020 Hundreds of supporters of Moqtada al-Sadr, the influential Shi'ite radical political and religious, gathered in the Jadriya district of Baghdad, Iraq, for a demonstration to demand that American troops leave the country.

From mid-morning, on the day dedicated to prayer by Muslims, phrases like "No, no America!" Rose from the speakers. Roads and bridges leading to the Green Zone, home to the Iraqi government and numerous foreign embassies, including that of the United States, have been blocked by concrete barriers.

Moqtada al-Sadr, whose party won the most seats in the May 2018 parliamentary elections, had called for a "one million man" demonstration to demand the withdrawal of American troops following the US attack that killed the Iranian general Qassem Soleimani and the Iraqi militia commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis.
