According to The Canberra Times, the decision to transfer was made after Assange’s lawyers met with prison officials.

“This step is a huge victory for Assange’s legal team and activists, who for several weeks insisted that the prison authorities stop this punitive effect on Assange,” he said.

Earlier, the Magistrates Court of Westminster London rescheduled from February to May a substantive hearing on the extradition of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

In December 2019, UN Special Rapporteur on Torture Nils Meltzer stated that Assange was subjected to psychological torture, which posed a threat to his life.

Meltzer recalled that when he visited a prison in Great Britain in May at Assange, "clinically measurable consequences of psychological torture" were noticeable, "certain cognitive abilities were already impaired then."
