An earthquake of 6.8 on the Richter scale hit Eastern Turkey. The strong shock, which according to media reports would have caused a victim, was recorded in the district of Sivrice, in the province of Elazig, about 10 kilometers deep, around 20.55 (local time, 18.55 in Italy), according to the Agency government of disaster situations. The American Institute of Geological Usgs measured the shock at 6.7 degrees. Among the aftershocks that followed the main one, also a 6.5 degree one.

Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said that "news is still awaited from more distant villages", in an area where there is currently a quantity of snow that does not favor movement or communication. The head of AFAD, the Turkish civil protection, Mehmet Gulluoglu, said that the teams of experts immediately went to work to make an assessment of the damage and of any collapsed buildings.

In the districts where the epicenter was registered "there are several buildings destroyed," said Ankara's interior minister, Suleyman Soylu.
