It is noted that this issue was discussed during a meeting of co-chairs of the intergovernmental commission on January 22.

“We went to meet the Russian request to begin the process of ascertaining ownership of the Alexander Compound in the Old City (Jerusalem),” Elkin said.

He said that Russia has filed documents that prove that the Alexander Compound should be “part of the property of the Russian Orthodox Church through the Imperial Orthodox Palestinian Society”.

According to the minister, a legal procedure has begun that will clarify property rights.

“Russian claims have been published, and now, within 60 days, if no one contradicts this and submits his evidence, this compound will be written in the name of the Russian Church (ROC). If there are alternative requests and appeals, it will go to court to make a decision on the basis of the documentation that is, ”Elkin said.

The Alexander Compound is located in the Old City of Jerusalem near the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. The architectural complex was acquired by Russia a century and a half ago. The complex includes the Shrine Threshold Judgment Gate, the house church of Alexander Nevsky and other attractions.
