The funnel spider usually lives in the country's most humid forest areas in eastern Australia, and is known for its very strong and fast-acting venom.

Experts at Australian Reptile Park announced on Wednesday that spiders' activities had increased in recent days, CNN reports.

- Funnel spiders can be one of the most dangerous spiders on the planet, Park spokesman Daniel Rumsey told the TV channel.

"Moving because of the rain"

The spiders are usually active during the summer, but the spider season started later this year because of what is described as "drier" weather.

- The funnel miner spider is moving out now because of the rain and can enter people's homes either through the ground or from the roof, says Warren Bailey, who works with pests.

The fires in Australia have been going on since July last year and have been for decades. At least 28 people have died and over 3,000 homes have been damaged or destroyed.

Heavy thunderstorms that resulted in rain alleviated the disaster somewhat, but in turn led to floods. Parts of south-eastern Australia have also been hit by hail as big as golf balls, which have smashed car windows and damaged birds. The same area had been hit by a sandstorm a day earlier.
