Even before Christmas, it was flagged because both staff and patients at the heart reception had begun to feel the construction dust that came from a renovation of the premises next door.

The symptoms included asthma attacks, difficulty breathing, red eyes and rashes on the body. But the decision to evacuate the ward was not made until Friday, when both patients and staff were moved to other premises.

Buildings everywhere

During the weekend, there was active work to be able to open the heart reception again - which meant that the staff were back in the department on Monday.

- Last Friday the ventilation went through thoroughly, and this weekend, there were construction sites everywhere. The staff felt a big difference on the air when they came to work this morning, and we are now returning to regular operations, Carina Bäckman writes in an email to SVT.

However, patients are expected to return to cardiac surgery only tomorrow.
