We have previously reported that there is a shortage of chefs in the elderly care restaurants, which has resulted in two dishes being reduced and now serving only one. All indications are that the difficulties will continue in the future - not least because of the large increase expected in people over 80 years of age.

To solve the large increase in the future, people are working in parallel to partly build new housing for the elderly, streamline working methods and create the conditions for employees to work more full-time than part-time.

"It is a challenge, but we will manage it. We also see that the needs of the elderly vary over time," says Stefan Österström, social director.

According to the social service in the municipality of Jönköping, the number of people over 80 is expected to increase by 46% by 2032. The number of unemployed persons is expected to increase by only 15% during the same period. Photo: SVT Grafik

"Responsibility of educators"

Right now, elderly care is struggling to get hold of chefs, but Stefan Österström thinks it is not uncommon for there to be a shortage of different types of careers in the elderly care period.

- Over time, it varies which professions can be difficult to recruit. Right now, there are chefs, physiotherapists or physiotherapists, but we have good opportunities to recruit, for example, sociognomists.

Can this be prevented in any way?

- We are part of a larger social system - this also affects the educational actors that exist. Some education programs are very popular, but the university education programs do not depend on responding to the interest that exists. This is a change that must take place at the societal level, says Stefan Österström.
