“And the people were very excited, pleased that the war would end soon. They enthusiastically greeted the Red Army, the population, I mean, ”he said.

Botyan led the operation to save Polish Krakow from extermination by the Nazis in January 1945.

Earlier, the Russian Ministry of Defense published archival historical documents on the liberation of Warsaw by Soviet troops in 1944.

In turn, the Polish Foreign Ministry said that the events in the Polish capital were not liberation, but brought "a new communist slavery."
