A medical study reported that bitter melon fruits - or what is known as bitter squash, which is closely related to cucumbers and zucchini grown in southern India - contribute to their natural extracts in fighting cancer.

The study was conducted by researchers led by Ratna Ray, professor at St. Louis University in Missouri, USA, and examined the effect of natural extracts of bitter melon on the spread of cancerous tumors.

Laboratory tests showed that the extract prevented these cancer cells from multiplying, which indicates their effectiveness in preventing the spread of cancer.

The researchers also found that plant extracts were able to reduce tongue cancer.
