January 11, 2020 China has announced the first death related to viral pneumonia cases since December of the outbreak in Wuhan, Hubei. The infection was attributed to a new type of virus from the same Sars family, which killed over 700 people between China and Hong Kong between 2002 and 2003.

The Wuhan Health Commission explained that 41 people were diagnosed with the symptoms of viral pneumonia: in addition to the first victim, 7 remain in serious condition and two have been discharged.

Health authorities also report that no new cases of the disease have been detected since January 3 and reiterate that there is no clear evidence of transmission between humans.
