A Mexican asylum seeker cut his throat in one of the bridges across Rio Grande after he was denied entry to the United States, two Mexican security officials confirmed.

The man, who has not been identified, tried to enter the country through the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge between the Mexican border city of Reynosa and Pharr, Texas.

The officials, who were not authorized to speak in public, said that around 5 pm local time, he took out a knife and cut his throat when he was denied access to the United States. Both workers added that the victim was an asylum seeker. .

"He killed himself," said one of the officials. The man took his own life on the Mexican side of the bridge, a few meters from the international dividing line.

A short video shared by one of the security sources showed the man, dressed in a blue shirt, approaching US officials on the bridge and putting a hand around his neck. The US Customs and Border Protection Office did not respond when asked about videos in which the man can be seen committing suicide on the bridge.

The attorney general's office for the Mexican state of Tamaulipas, where Reynosa is located, said he was investigating the man's death.

Many Mexicans seeking refuge in the United States say their lives are at risk from their country due to violent criminal gangs, which have turned parts of the country into highly dangerous areas. Homicides have reached record levels in Mexico during the last two years.

The president of the United States, Donald Trump, has made border security and illegal immigration one of his Government priorities.
