In the city of Khmelnitskyj, located 320 km south-west of the Ukrainian capital Kiev, a passerby saw two German shepherds who had sunk into a frozen river and held themselves afloat, clinging to a tree branch. The man immediately called Civil Protection, while trying to calm the dogs to keep them still. Rescuers had to crack the ice to open up the space and be able to get to the dogs on an inflatable boat. The rescue was successful and the dogs were brought ashore.
