Tuesday in Algeria, several hundred people marched in the streets of the capital. The participants once again demanded a change of regime, and the release of the detainees from Hirak, this protest movement born last February and which crossed the year 2019. At the dawn of the new year, face to face endures between them and power.

For Hirak, the new year begins as the previous one ended: in determination. Algeria begins 2020 with a new president, Abdelmadjid Tebboune , elected just over two weeks ago, a new Prime Minister, Abdelaziz Djerad, appointed last weekend, responsible for forming a government, and a new head of interim staff, Said Chengriha, following the death of Ahmed Gaid Salah last week.

But for the Algerians who continue to mobilize, these changes are not. The status quo continues, with on the one hand demonstrators who reject the new president, and express their demands and on the other the power, which says reaching out to the protesters and which calls for dialogue.

From 2019, Algerians keep the image of a historic year, that of the people's awakening, after more than 10 months of an unprecedented, always peaceful mobilization, which led to the resignation of Abdelaziz Bouteflika after two decades in power.

For this new year, they intend to continue making their voices heard, and some optimists confide that they hope that 2020 will mark the consecration of a democratic transition.

The first miracle is that of a people who rise up when they thought they were desperate ...
