To ensure the safety of ships related to Japan, the government has decided to dispatch the SDF to the Middle East. This is the first long-term overseas dispatch based on the “Survey and Research” of the Ministry of Defense Law, and the government will carefully explain the need for dispatch.

To strengthen the intelligence gathering system necessary to ensure the safety of Japan-related vessels in the Middle East, the government on Thursday decided to dispatch a SDF escort ship and patrol aircraft for one year. I was ready.

This dispatch is a unique initiative of Japan, and it is the first long-term overseas activity based on "research and research" stipulated in the Ministry of Defense Establishment Law.

A patrol unit for anti-piracy operations will be launched in mid-January next year, based in Djibouti in eastern Africa, and the escort ship Takanami will leave Japan in February of the following year.

If the dispatch is extended, the Cabinet will decide again, and if the necessity is no longer recognized, the activity will be terminated.

The government states that, given the growing tensions in the Middle East, it is necessary to strengthen the information gathering system necessary to ensure the safety of vessels related to Japan.

On the other hand, opposition parties have criticized that "conservative overseas dispatch, which has no clear necessity or urgency, could extend the range of use of force and put SDF personnel at risk."

For this reason, the government has decided to carefully explain the necessity of dispatch, such as the fact that Japan depends on the Middle East for about 90% of crude oil imports, and ensuring safe navigation is an important issue.
