New Avangard hypersonic missiles have been deployed to Russia. After a series of tests, these weapons, capable of reaching a target almost anywhere in the world, are now operational.

With our correspondent in Moscow, Jean-Didier Revoin

A regiment of the Russian armed forces now has a missile capable of reaching a speed exceeding 27 times that of sound, or more than 33,000 km / h. Called a " practically invincible " weapon by Vladimir Putin , the Avangard can change course and altitude, which, at such a speed, would enable it to pass any existing missile shield , in particular the American shield.

It is indeed, if it works, (…) a huge advance in terms of very long-range weapons

The disarmament treaty at stake

For Moscow, it is undoubtedly a means of showing Washington its determination not to be left behind in terms of weapons technology. In recent months, the United States and Russia have accused each other of violating the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Weapons Treaty to get out of it, each on its own.

In 2021, the Start treaty on the reduction of strategic armaments also expires and for the moment, the two former superpowers are far from agreeing on its extension. One can therefore wonder whether the announced deployment is not another attempt by Moscow to force the United States to negotiate a new disarmament agreement, which it believes is the source of international stability.
