by Tiziana Di Giovannandrea 25 December 2019 For an error in the calculation of the points he was rewarded as the winner of a tournament that turned to the Palacannizzaro of Aci Castello (Ct) but realizing the mistake he decided, without hesitation, to give the medal of gold to the second place in the race.

In the young 10-year-old athlete, Giorgio Torrisi, this is his name, the sporting spirit that leads to respect for the opponent's identity has definitely prevailed.

The young Giorgio, black belt of karate, is the protagonist of this Christmas story and the victory of the gold medal thanks to a mistake by the judges during the 7th International Edukarate tournament that took place in Sicily at the Palacannizzaro in Aci Castello he threw him out of the way: when he found out that he hadn't really won he chose to give the gold medal to Carlotta Bartolo, 11 years old, who came second.

The story was reconstructed from the local edition of Repubblica.it. The 7th edition of the International Edukarate, regional martial arts competition, saw 350 athletes from all over Sicily challenge each other.

Giorgio Torrisi, from Catania, was judged the first in his category but immediately after the award ceremony the winner's parents themselves sensed that there was something wrong with the scores. "My son is used to winning - said Chiara, his mother, in Repubblica - but also to losing with humility. I explained to Giorgio that there had been a mistake and he wanted to give the medal to those who deserved it to his place".

"Our first victory is this - said Giuseppe Bartolo, Carlotta's father and karate master - to transmit the values of loyalty to our athletes and children". Carlotta thus obtained her deserved medal, but the real moral winner of the event was little Giorgio.
