Parents' academic background, lack of competent teachers and poorer conditions for creating a good school environment are some of the decisive reasons for the diminished equality seen throughout the country, according to the Directorate of Education, Peter Fredriksson.

- Maybe it is that students have difficulties in school because they cannot meet a skilled teacher and do not get the education they need, he says.

"We have the same background as the young people"

In the Stockholm suburb Hagalund, some guys decided to create meaningful contexts for young people in the immediate area. First by starting the football team Solna FC and then by offering homework help three hours a week, says Nahom Ogbazion.

- I think one of the reasons why things have gone so well is because we have the same background as the young people. We have grown up here and gone through the same problem. We want to show that you can do something valuable with your life, he says.

"Has helped me think ahead"

16-year-old Nikola Berovic graduated grade nine with no final grade and therefore does not attend school today. Low study motivation and difficult to feel connectedness with the teachers are two reasons he mentions.

But despite that, he goes to homework help to improve his knowledge if he returns to the school bench one day.

- The teachers did not have the right help for me. But the homework helpers here I have seen in the area all my life, so we have a different chemistry. When they tell me to do something, then I do it. It is about respect and it has worked for me. They have helped me to think ahead, he says.
