At least 16 inmates died this Sunday in a clash between rival gangs in a prison near Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, who joined the 18 prisoners killed on Friday in a shooting in another prison.

The spokesman for the Inter-Institutional Security Force (Fusina), José Coello, confirmed to local media the death of the 16 prisoners during a fight in the jail of the municipality of El Porvenir, department Francisco Morazán.

Two other prisoners were injured with a white weapon, so they were taken to the Tegucigalpa School Hospital, according to relief agencies, who did not delve into the seriousness of the injuries.

In addition, 10 days ago, a riot in a "maximum security" prison in the department of El Paraíso, in eastern Honduras, left five prisoners dead, local authorities and media reported.

A preliminary report explained that this revolt was registered in the prison of La Tolva, in Morocelí, for reasons investigated by the prison authorities and the Police Investigation Directorate (DPI). The bodies of the prisoners were transferred to the department of forensic medicine of the Tegucigalpa Public Ministry to perform the respective autopsies.

The dead, according to local media, were shot dead by an inmate known as El Sanguinario.
