French President Emmanuel Macron met on Tuesday December 17 with Algerian President-elect Abdelamadjid Tebboune, winner of the December 12 presidential election at the very first, the Élysée Palace announced in a statement.

The French head of state presented "his sincere wishes for success in the exercise of his high responsibilities and to assure him that France is standing by Algeria's side at this important moment in its history," the press release said. Elysium.

The two heads of state "agreed to work together to develop relations of friendship, respect and trust between France and Algeria and to cooperate on regional crises".

In a first reaction last Friday, Emmanuel Macron had simply indicated that he "took note" of the victory of Abdelmadjid Tebboune, and called on the authorities to initiate a "dialogue" with the Algerian people, while the holding of the presidential election was rejected by an unprecedented popular protest movement in Algeria.

A minimal reaction and a message that did not seem to the taste of Abdelaziz Bouteflika's successor. "Regarding the French president, I will not answer him. He is free to sell the goods he wants in his country, but I was elected by the Algerian people and I only recognize the Algerian people", had- he replied curtly, with loud applause, during a press conference organized on December 13 in Algiers.
