For her third annual visit to Beijing, Carrie Lam was received on Monday December 16 by the Prime Minister and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Which found the head of the Hong Kong executive " very courageous ".

With our correspondent in Beijing, Stéphane Lagarde

One thing is certain: Carrie Lam is today one of the leaders of the Hong Kong executive among the least popular in the recent history of the special administrative region, but she enjoys the unwavering support of the central government here in Beijing. Support much needed by the current Hong Kong official, the majority of whom suffered a humiliating defeat at the polls in the district elections with an opinion again mobilized in the streets this weekend.

" Urgently probing " the problems

At the end of these three days of visits, Carrie Lam thanked Chinese President Xi Jinping for his support and advice, the same for Prime Minister Li Keqiang who gave him more or less the same speech during a meeting in the hall known as "Hong Kong" of the Great Palace of the People. He believes that the Hong Kong government has overcome the challenges it faced, but that it must " urgently probe the social problems that would be entrenched in Hong Kong society ".

The appeasement not certain

It is not sure that these speeches are enough to appease the protesters in Hong Kong, on the contrary, who announce new demonstrations on the occasion of Xi Jinping's visit to Macao for the twentieth anniversary of the handover of the ex - Portuguese colony.
