From our correspondent in Bangkok , Carol Isoux

At Wat Pho School, the oldest and most famous in the country, hundreds of Thai and foreign students flock every month to learn the ancient techniques of Thai massage.

In pairs, installed on mattresses aligned on the floor, they learn relaxation techniques, but also therapy for certain chronic conditions such as migraines, back pain or depression. The goal is to take into account the body in its environment.

A practice born in temples

“ Here we teach relaxation, but also healing massage, which can cure certain illnesses. We spend a lot of time on the soles of the feet because it is the basis of the body, our connection to our environment, from which we draw our energy like a tree needs healthy roots to feed and develop, our feet are important in the circulation of energy, ”says the school manager.

" Once you have massaged the soles of your feet, and the patient is well relaxed, you can go up gently along your body, " she continues. Born in temples, places of transmission of knowledge, the practice of massage is very lively among Thai people of all ages , who often practice it as a family.

The additional resources granted by UNESCO's heritage classification may help to promote traditional establishments and clean up the shops of untrained masseurs who are swarming in tourist areas.
