The United States and China have agreed on the content of the preliminary trade pact announced in October by Donald Trump, the US press said. This agreement should prevent the entry into force of new taxes on Chinese products, which Donald Trump threatened to impose this Sunday.

With our Washington correspondent, Anne Corpet

" We are very close to a major agreement with China . They want it and so do we ! Donald Trump flaunted in capital letters on his Twitter feed in the morning.

Getting VERY close to a BIG DEAL with China. They want it, and so do we!

Fight against the theft of intellectual property

A few hours later, the American press has said: the terms of the agreement are fixed. He would only want to finalize it. This is a preliminary text, which Donald Trump had already mentioned existed more than two months ago, ensuring at the time that it would be signed quickly.

Beijing would commit to buying US $ 50 billion worth of US agricultural products in 2020, about double its 2017 purchases, in exchange for lower tariffs on goods imported from China. According to Bloomberg, the Chinese have also agreed to fight more vigorously against the theft of intellectual property.

Information still unclear

This information, though inaccurate, prompted an immediate rise in agricultural prices in the United States. The conclusion of an agreement with China is crucial for American farmers, seriously affected by the trade war. It would also avoid the entry into force this Sunday of taxes on 160 billion dollars of Chinese products.
