In West Africa, and particularly in the Sahel, more than 9 million people are in need of immediate food aid because of rising violence and insecurity, a figure that has doubled since 2018, according to the Network. Food Crisis Prevention Program (RPCA) based at the OECD headquarters in Paris.
According to a study conducted in October-December 2019, Nigeria, home to 4 million people in need of immediate food assistance , particularly in the north-east of the country where the Boko Haram group operates, is the most hard hit. Then comes Niger with 1.5 million people, then Burkina Faso with 1.2 million people affected.
For the first time, a special analysis of food and nutrition insecurity was conducted on the situation in nine IDP camps in # Nigeria and five refugee camps in #Niger https://t.co/1OdzB945Lp @OCHAROWCA @ACF_Nigeria @WFP_Niger pic.twitter.com/5PngUygHHp
RPCA (@RPCA_network) December 9, 2019The rise of insecurity and intercommunal violence is the main cause of this crisis situation. Not only does insecurity disrupt trade, but it also leads in each of these areas to large population displacements. Displaced people face the greatest difficulties in feeding themselves.
#Mali: About 648,000 Malians need immediate assistance, 3.2% of the total population (20.5 million). This number is two times lower compared to the neighboring #BurkinaFaso, but is almost twice as much as in the previous year➡️ https://t.co/NHLJvJ8mp1 pic.twitter.com/J5kVW8GdiB
RPCA (@RPCA_network) December 9, 2019If nothing is done quickly, the situation could seriously worsen next summer especially in the region of Lake Chad and Liptako Gourma, warns the Food Crisis Prevention Network (RPCA). Northern Senegal and Mauritania could also be affected due to a large forage deficit due to drought. More than 14 million people would then need immediate food assistance.
We are not facing a situation where food is missing. For a variety of reasons, people do not have access to this food.
