For nearly ten days, the Iranians experienced disruptions in both the Internet and mobile networks and were unable to reach the outside world, according to the organization Netblocks, which investigates interruptions in Internet connection around the world.

When it finally started working again, terrible videos and images began to spread from a extinguished Iran.

"It's incredible"

Amnesty International has been able to verify some of these. Protesters being shot from close range or from behind. Even from the air. In a video, a helicopter circulates and shoots down at people on the ground.

- Violence of the regime indicates uncertainty. It is madness because there were peaceful protests, says an Iranian studying in Sweden.

For fear, she chooses to remain anonymous.

- I'm not really saying anything strange, but I'm still scared. They create such fear in everyone, it is inconceivable, she says.

She was one of many who could not reach her family and friends. And tried in every way possible.

- It took several days before I managed to get hold of anyone. I tried to call in different ways but no one answered. Iranians are usually very active on Instagram but no one had even posted a story.

- It was a hell of not knowing what's going on.

Hundreds of thousands protested

Iran's interior minister has said that 200,000 people took part in the protests that spread like wildfire across the country since deciding to raise gasoline prices on November 15, writes the AP news agency. Over 700 banks are reported to have been destroyed.

According to an Iranian parliamentarian, there are 7,000 arrested, Reuters reports. Eight people arrested are said to have "CIA connections", reports the state news agency Irna.

The prosthetics have been called a "dangerous conspiracy" by the country's highest spiritual leader Ayatolla Khamenei.

"Terrible to watch the videos"

Concern has been evident to many who have loved ones in the country. Gradually, it has been found that the majority of those killed have been shot dead, according to Amnesty. On Friday, they wrote down the death toll to at least 161 dead.

Iran has previously dismissed the death toll of over a hundred people as speculative, while Amnesty fears it is significantly higher.

- It's been awful to watch the videos. They shot people like it was a computer game, but this is no game. I have friends all over Iran and could not tell if they were feeling well or were injured, the Iranian student says.
