27 years ago, Severn Cullis-Suzuki had to speak to the world's leaders at the Rio de Janeiro Environmental Meeting. She told of her fear and urged the delegates not to forget that the negotiations were for their own children. As Greta Thunberg of her time, she received applause and attention. The message was similar and she sees the similarities herself.

- I'm a big fan of Greta, she's an amazing young warrior, she says.

When she was nine, she started her own environmental association. When she was 12, she and three friends raised money to travel from Canada to the Rio de Janeiro Environmental Conference. Her six minutes in the pulpit gave Severn Culli's Suzuki tremendous attention and was the start of a life-long path for her as an activist for the environment and indigenous people.

There was a strong environmental wave

The UN Environment Conference in Rio de Janeiro laid the foundation for global climate negotiations and much other environmental work. And then there was a strong environmental balance and a belief that international cooperation could solve environmental issues. But that didn't happen. Since 1992, carbon dioxide emissions have increased 60 percent.

In the clip above you can see pieces of Severn Culli's Suzuki speech and Gretas, and why she believes that children and young people have a unique opportunity to influence the rulers.
