The head of the National Committee for Organ Transplantation, Dr. Ali Al-Obaidli, said there is a plan to prepare cadres specialized in organ transplantation, pointing out that a recent study revealed that about 68% of the population in the country expressed their desire to donate their organs after death.

Al Obaidli said in a statement to Emirates Today, on the sidelines of the 15th International Organ Donation Conference, which concluded recently, that a number of initiatives have been implemented to support citizens to specialize in the field of organ transplantation. He continued: «The National Committee, in cooperation with companies and health authorities in the State, to provide all aspects of training necessary, and the preparation of specialized medical cadres of citizens and non-citizens in the donation and transplantation organs, where the number of specialists in this field currently seven doctors of citizens and residents».

He pointed to the holding of several events, aimed at encouraging the public to donate organs, to support organic failure, save the lives of others, in addition to other events aimed at training health workers in this specialization, where they will be trained on the latest developments in the field of organ transplantation globally, as well as a discussion Religious and moral aspects and policies regulating it.

He said that the increase in the number of organ donation centers in the country is mainly related to the increase in the percentage of donors, where the current four centers are sufficient, and meet the purpose to the fullest, especially since less than 1% of the total deaths only fit to donate their organs.

He said that donating organs falls under two basic types, the first is to donate between living relatives in one of the kidneys or part of the liver, and the second type is to donate after death, and stressed that expressing the desire to donate is a solidarity position by all categories of society, especially since their desire may not Necessarily means that they are eligible to donate after death.

He pointed out that activating the desire to donate after death will be included in the identity data, and is currently coordinating with the Federal Authority for Identity and Nationality in this regard, to include this desire in the data of citizens and residents in the near future.

He added: «The study, which revealed that 68% of the population in the country expressed their desire to donate organs after death reflects the culture of solidarity and sacrifice prevailing in society, and that there are no radical challenges facing this trend».

He said that among the initiatives that participate in the National Committee for Organ Donation, next month, «Marathon ADNOC» to raise awareness of the importance of organ donation, and instill this culture among members of the community.

He stressed that according to the law, the donation of the survivors is limited to relatives only, after following the legal and medical procedures, especially since the organs that can be donated during life is limited to certain parts, most notably the liver and one of the kidneys.

He said that the 15th International Conference on Organ Donation had warned against resorting to non-specialized transplant centers outside the country, which were unethical because of the high risks involved, as well as the illegality of such practices.

Al Obaidli said that the donation and organ transplantation sector has recently witnessed the introduction of modern advanced technologies, the most important of which are organs that keep organs safe for a longer period, which ensures that they travel to far-flung countries and long distances to save the lives of other patients. .
