SVT News Öst has during the week examined the support for young people with disabilities. We have presented new figures that show that the number of people who lose their compensation has increased significantly over the past two years.

Three times as many

The number of people who lose their activity allowance is three times as many in 2018 compared to 2016. This applies to people between 19 and 29 who have a disability.

At the age of 30, one third of them will be reimbursed, as they will then have to seek sickness compensation. There has been a doubling of the number that loses compensation when they turn 30.

"The examples we have seen show that there are issues in the legislation that we have an obligation to look at," says Ardalan Shekarabi (S), Minister of Social Security.

Too many young people being thrown out of health insurance?

- I make the assessment that based on the application we have today and that we have had in recent years, we need to review the legislation. Because we see that there are people who do badly here.

SVT's review also shows that many people with disabilities are forced to turn to the social services to get money for food and rent. On behalf of SVT, the National Board of Health and Welfare has produced new figures that show that 850 people had social security support while participating in a daily activity for people with disabilities in October last year.

"Only in exceptional cases"

- The point of our social insurance is that people who for various reasons do not have the ability to work should be caught up. It is only in exceptional cases that people with these disabilities should land in what we call welfare support. Supply support is the last protection in society. That is why I definitely see a need to review the legislation, says Ardalan Shekarabi (S), Minister of Social Security.

The government has changed its position

In February, then Social Security Minister Annika Strandhäll (S) told SVT News that one would look at the legislation for sickness compensation.

But then it was not relevant to change the legislation for activity compensation.

"The Social Insurance Office has not signaled to us that people do not receive the support they need when it comes to the activity allowance," she said.

But now the Government has changed. The law should also be reviewed in relation to the activity allowance.

- We see a need to review the legislation. Both in terms of activity compensation and sickness compensation, Ardalan Shekarabi (S), Minister of Social Security, tells SVT News East.

"Both systems work together"

- We see a development for activity compensation where we have many who are not entitled to activity compensation. We also see that this group is referred to as support support. But the whole idea of the model was precisely to meet this need that exists in young people with disabilities, he says.

How do you see that there were three times as many who lost the activity allowance 2018 compared to 2016?

- It would be very strange if we did not do a review because of this.

What do you say about this 30 year limit? Where has there been a doubling of the number that gets lost with the compensation?

- I see a need to review both the activity allowance and the sickness allowance and it is clear that the two systems work together.
