22 February 2019The prison order of the two German managers of Thyssenkrupp, issued in Italy in 2016, is also applicable in Germany. This was decided by the Essen regional court, which pronounced itself on the matter on the 17th January in the case of Harald Espenhahn, and on 4th February on Gerald Priegnitz.

According to the spokesman of the same court in Ansa, the two managers have challenged the decision, at the court of appeal of Hamm. And they cannot be arrested before the pronunciation.

In Germany, the two managers will not be able to serve a sentence of more than 5 years in prison, which is the maximum for the crime of culpable homicide, the spokesman said.

The Cassation, in Italy, had sentenced Espenhahn to 9 years and 8 months, and Priegnitz to 6 years and 10 months, following the fire of 6 December 2007, in the Turin factories, where 7 people died.

The sister of one of the victims: "I'm disgusted"
"I am disgusted, they have teased us from the beginning. With all that they have let us pass, they are making us die one after another". There is bitterness in the words of Laura Rodinò, Rosario's sister, one of the seven workers who died in the fire of Thyssen, for the legal proceedings of the last days. "I cannot imagine that there could be yet another appeal," he adds of the German managers' appeal against the arrest warrant. "We are tired, Italy must not allow such a thing".

Bonafede: we will continue to monitor the matter day by day
The news is circulating of an alleged arrest of the two managers of ThyssenKrupp sentenced in Italy in 2015 for the fire at the Turin plant. This is not the case, but we can say that the criminal execution section of the Court of Essen has declared admissible the execution of the sentence issued by the Court of Assizes of Appeal of Turin on May 29, 2015 against Harald Espenhahn and Gerald Priegnitz ". Justice Minister Alfonso Bonafede on Facebook.

"I was informed yesterday by diplomatic channels. But it is not over, the two convicts have challenged the verdict. We will continue to monitor the affair day by day and keep all of you and especially the families informed," the Minister added.

Guariniello: justice has been done
The news was greeted with great satisfaction by Raffaele Guariniello, the former prosecutor who followed the Turin trial. "The important thing is that the German leaders pay the penalty, as happened to the Italian managers. Many years have passed since the tragedy, but this is an important day because justice has been done".
