The PP is not a historical match. The PP was born in 1989 with a very clear reason: to end the fragmentation of the center-right vote in Spain . From the extreme right to the right of the Popular Alliance , through Christian democracy to reach the most moderate social democrats. All this was collected under the umbrella of the PP led by José María Aznar and held together until in 2015 it began to disintegrate through the young center. Mariano Rajoy declared himself surprised by the emergence of Citizens because he always thought that the compact and granite PP electorate would be broken earlier by the extreme right than by the center.

Paradoxes of life, the centrist Rajoy left the competition for the center and the more right-wing Pablo Casado has grown a graft of the most radical wood, which is almost as large as the popular tree. "The PP was born with the objective of uniting the center right, if it fails to comply with that business name because the vote is divided into several parties, it is normal to suffer a lot," summarizes a former PP leader who participated in the re-foundation. The former president of the party and architect of the reunification of the center-right vote, José María Aznar, warns him in almost all his public interventions. "Fragmentation is a curse" that will prevent an alternative to the Government of the left.

The current direction of the PP played a lot with the expectations on the eve of 10-N. He wanted to install in public opinion the idea that there was a technical tie with the PSOE -110 seats-, that the prodigal son Abascal would be paraded at the foot of the ballot box, and that Casado would leave the waters, becoming an alternative to the Government. But citizens did not respond to the stimuli as Genoa expected. The bad thing is not the 88 of the PP - still too few to think of a government alternative - the worst are the 52 deputies of Vox. There, seat with seat, group with group, that this time they will not be able to send the chicken coop so that they are not seen.

The leaders of the PP consulted make a not very optimistic assessment of the results of 10-N: "As long as we cannot unite the entire vote from the center to the right, we will not be able to build an alternative Government." The results of the PP in these generals have, in addition, a particularity that cannot go unnoticed by anyone. While in the communities of Galicia and Castilla y León , the PP has kept Vox and Citizens at bay, in Andalusia , Murcia or Madrid - precisely where they have agreed with them - those of Abascal have made them an important break. In Murcia, Vox has won the elections, as in some Andalusian provinces and in towns in Madrid where the PP was hegemonic.

The PP of Galicia, led by Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has kept both Citizens and Vox at bay. There are no Galician deputies from either party. The Galician PP has significantly improved its results.

The president of the Xunta de Galicia , who leads the most centrist sector of the PP, became the electoral campaign in the main target of the Vox attacks, which Abascal and Espinosa de los Monteros identify with the peripheral nationalisms that seek disunity from Spain However, one of Núñez Feijóo's declared objectives has been to stop the advance of Galician nationalism, turning it into a regionalism identified with the PP as the guarantor party of the unity of Spain. The PP of Castilla y León has also improved its 28-A results, with three more seats. Citizens have been swept from that community, losing their eight seats. The PP-Citizens Government Pact has been clearly profitable by the president, Alfonso Fernández Mañueco.

The 52 seats of Vox, nobody is deceived, are a clear and concrete threat that the PP will have to face in the immediate future. «We are in a compromised situation. We will have to do pedagogy, ”says a regional leader. Pedagogy, for example, "to defend the autonomous State" with which Vox wants to end. The Madrid PP fell into the trap by voting on the last day of the campaign a Vox initiative calling for the illegalization of the independence parties.

The PP expects Pablo Casado to maintain the autonomy of the party's performance and the moderate strategy of recent months, without being affected by Vox radicalism. «The only way to stand up to them is to defend our principles, our ideas and not move from the center. The opposite would be a mistake, ”said the sources consulted.
