11 November 2019The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, presided today at the Palazzo del Quirinale, the meeting of the Supreme Defense Council.

The Council made a point of situation on the main crisis areas, with particular regard to the Mediterranean and Middle East area, and on the presence of the Armed Forces in the various Operational Theaters.

Iraq. "Guarantee our presence"
"The recent attack on our contingent in Iraq confirms that transnational terrorism remains the main threat to Italy and to the entire international community. It is necessary to continue to guarantee our presence in the main areas of instability and to contribute decisively to the strategies aimed at develop an effective system of common contrast to the phenomenon ", reads the final statement.

Syria. "Concern for security"
"With reference to the complex situation in Syria, the Council expressed its concern about the possible consequences of a humanitarian and security nature. Italy confirms its commitment to initiatives aimed at preserving a solid cohesion among the allies and to avoid dispersing the important successes achieved in the fight against terrorist organizations in that area ".

Libya. "Overcoming critical issues that hinder dialogue"
In Libya, the confrontation between the warring factions seems destined to continue with ever more serious consequences on the social and security situation of the country.
