"His life and his physical integrity are under threat," the Mexican foreign minister said on Monday.

Mexico on Monday decided to grant political asylum to former Bolivian President Evo Morales, Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said.

The Mexican Minister of the Interior "Olga Sanchez Cordero has decided to grant Evo Morales political asylum, his life and physical integrity are threatened," said Marcelo Ebrard during a press conference in Mexico City. He said that the government had been asked by Evo Morales, who was forced to resign. "He asked us verbally and formally to grant him political asylum in our country," he said.

"Mexico has always distinguished itself throughout its history for protecting those seeking refuge," concluded the Mexican foreign minister.

Bolivia currently without a leader

The socialist Evo Morales, who was released by the Bolivian army on Sunday after three weeks of violent demonstrations, was one of the last representatives of the "pink wave" that swept the Latin American Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Ecuador and Venezuela.

Bolivia is since Monday without leader. The successors planned for Evo Morales by the Constitution all resigned with him.
