10 November 2019After the episode of Giuseppe Conte in Taranto the situation of the former Ilva remains stalled. The next meeting between Conte and the patron Lakshmi Mittal could already take place tomorrow. It appears that the government's plan provides for more favorable conditions for the multinational, the restoration of the criminal shield, the possibility of a financed state-financed intervention. Two hypotheses that, according to majority rumors, could be feasible: a maxi-discount on the price that ArcelorMittal pays for the rent and which has already put on the plate for the acquisition of the former Ilva (1.8 billion) and a negotiation to reduce redundancies. Any solution hypothesis would start from the assumption that the direct intervention of the State in the capital of the company is to be considered only as a last resort. However, it could not guarantee the maintenance of jobs and would cost substantial amounts. "Who puts the money? Who pays?" has already attacked Matteo Salvini.

At the same time, if the multinational does not soften its conditions, the premier is preparing for the legal war. "We will not allow the company to leave," thunders Di Maio. And the government, in its battle, is also counting on the political side of the EU. And the economic affairs commissioner Paolo Gentiloni underlines: "in these matters the pacts must be respected and this concerns both the ArcelorMittal group and the Italian institutions".

The words of Gentiloni make implicit reference to the theme of the penal shield, divisive by the majority and within the M5s. The Democratic Party has "frozen" the amendment to the tax bill, but the deadlines to present it expire tomorrow morning. Di Maio chooses instead to "protect" one of the principles of identity of the movement. But, faced with the criminal shield as 'conditio sine qua non' to save the former Ilva, the leader would put the groups in front of their responsibilities on the former Ilva. In the M5s, moreover, he identified in the league the objective of the political narrative to field on the dossier. "The league is a friend of the multinationals, we protect workers and health", Luigi Di Maio reiterated yesterday from Berlin, now starting to attack the "made in Salvini" sovereignty.

The Italian interlocutors of Lakshmi Mittal, do not show themselves particularly united. Yesterday there was a fierce controversy between Confindustria and trade unions on employment guarantees. Confindustria president Vincenzo Boccia said it would be a "huge mistake to maintain employment levels in cyclical crises". In his reply, Landini did not use words: "They are meaningless words: there is an agreement to be enforced, signed a year ago, which includes commitments". Commitments increasingly difficult to enforce.
