09 November 2019It is a bitter controversy between Confindustria and the unions on the Arcelor Mittal dispute. Triggering it were the words of the president of the industrialists Boccia: "If we pretend that despite the economic crises companies should maintain employment levels we make a huge mistake". The reply of the secretary of the CGIL, Maurizio Landini, was immediate: "Parole senza senso".

Boccia (Confindustria): mistake keeping employment levels with the current crisis
"If we pretend that despite the economic crises, companies must maintain employment levels, then finance unemployment and not keep businesses, we make a huge mistake," said Confindustria leader Vincenzo Boccia, on the sidelines of the Small Business Forum, answering the question on the 5 thousand redundancies feared by ArcelorMittal. "If there is an economic crisis linked to steel, it is useless to pretend that it is not there. We need to understand how to manage this phase by allowing us to 'build', as happens in all companies in the world," Boccia added. "There are tools such as layoffs and others, which are activated in negative economic moments of business, it is necessary to face the problem with seriousness and common sense. The point is to create development in that territory, to build other job opportunities, but not substitutes, complementary. If Ilva withdraws due to the international situation, each company must have a short-term flexibility ".

Landini: "From Boccia words without meaning"
The reply from the CGIL secretary general, Landini, arrives by post, saying: today's words of Confindustria president Vincenzo Boccia, according to which the former Ilva of Taranto would maintain a high level of employment despite current economic crises, "they are meaningless words: there is an agreement to be enforced, signed a year ago, which includes commitments". According to the CGIL leader, "they are not temporary market drops that change strategic plans, they foresee 4 billion investments. Those agreements there must be respected: and he too should ask the multinational to respect our country, and to respect the agreements. I believe that reliability in respect of agreements is a rule of the social partners ".

On Monday possible new meeting between the Count and the top management of ArceloMittal
Meanwhile, the prime minister, Giuseppe Conte, after yesterday's visit to Taranto, could return to meet the leaders of the group on Monday. The government is also working on a multi-year fund to be used for the redevelopment and reintegration of over 1,500 workers currently in redundancy.
