• More than 800 people in Sweden are waiting for organs
  • In order to use a transplant organ, the donor must die in hospital under intensive care with a respirator. Such are the rules because one must be able to be sure that the organ in question has received both blood and oxygen all the time.
  • The willingness to donate organs is great in Sweden when compared to the rest of the EU. To obtain comparable figures, the term "number of donors per million inhabitants" is used (PMP = Per Million Person). In 2018, there were 17.8 actual donors per million inhabitants in the country. Östergötland is part of the South East Healthcare region and had a lower figure of 15 PMP. This year, that figure has increased to 19.6 PMP so far.
  • Transplants of larger organs are done in four locations in the country, Skåne University Hospital in Malmö and Lund, Sahlgrenska in Gothenburg, Karolinska in Huddinge and at the Akademiska hospital in Uppsala.
  • Transplants of larger organs are mainly done by heart, lung, liver and kidney. It is also possible to transplant tissues such as cornea, skin, heart valves and bone tissue.
