A Spanish tourist was taken hostage this Sunday during an assault on a public passenger transport van between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, in the southeastern Mexican state of Quintana Roo, and was later released, local authorities confirmed.

Although no further details have been disclosed, it was reported that the 26-year-old woman, originally from León, appeared in Cancun and was transferred to the premises of the Attorney General's Office in Quintana Roo in that city to testify before the authorities.

Through the Twitter network, the head of the State Secretariat of Public Security of Quintana Roo, Alberto Capella, confirmed the facts.

"We had an assault on public passenger transport where a tourist is deprived of liberty. Local and federal corporations have implemented a search operation. THE VICTIM HAS BEEN RELEASED IN GOOD HEALTH AND WE ARE AFTER THE OR RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS FACT ", public.

Consular sources indicated that the case had already been notified to the Spanish Embassy in Mexico City and is being followed up.

The events occurred in the morning and during the search and location operation of the Spanish tourist, a helicopter from the Secretariat of the Navy was used.

According to the data collected, the van left Cancun and at a stop located in the municipality of Puerto Morelos a man came up with a backpack from which he took a long gun with which he intimidated the passengers to assault them.

While the van continued its journey to Playa del Carmen, in the municipality of Solidaridad, the man stripped passengers of their belongings and at one point ordered the driver to return to Cancun.

On the way back the assailant ordered the driver to stop on the federal highway, but at the time of descent he took the Spanish tourist hostage and then went into the undergrowth.

The passengers, among whom was a man identified as Juan N., 29 years old - a companion of the young woman and also of Spanish nationality - asked for the intervention of the police.

According to the driver and passengers, the assailant was a man of thin build, approximately 1.50 meters high, wearing a red vest, red shorts and a navy blue backpack where he carried the gun.

Police versions indicate that shortly after noon it was announced that the Spanish tourist was located in Cancun, apparently in good health and was waiting for a medical check-up.
