The electoral law, which requires a two-thirds majority in the lower house for a new election to become a reality, proved to be no viable way for Prime Minister Boris Johnson to get through his plans for a quick Brexit.

- Now he hopes that Parliament will adopt a new law that requires only a simple majority, that is, more than half vote yes, says SVT's European correspondent Christoffer Wendick.

By the Tory government submitting a bill, and the opposition making additions to it, it becomes possible to push through a new election with a simple majority.

The Liberal Democrats and the Scottish Nationalist Party, who both want a new referendum on Brexit, may be ready to vote for this.

The largest opposition party, Labor, is unclear and divided on the issue of Brexit and has weak opinion figures. That is why they have tried to avoid new elections without saying it straight out.
