The new laws were the result of amendments put forward by Westminster MPs from the Labor Parliament last summer.

As specified, earlier women in Northern Ireland could have an abortion only if pregnancy would pose a serious risk to the physical or mental health of the mother.

“Women's right to safe abortion and equal marriage has now become legal in Northern Ireland. This is a historic moment. Thanks to all the campaigners and MPs from the Labor Party who worked tirelessly to achieve this significant victory for equality and human rights, ”wrote the leader of the opposition Labor Party of Great Britain Jeremy Corbin on Twitter.

In May, a federal court in the US state of Mississippi temporarily blocked a new state “fetal heartbeat” law that prohibits abortion after about six weeks of gestation.
